The process of grooming your dog at home starts with bathing them. The thing is that they do not need to bathe as frequently as the remaining members of the family. If you bathe them more than is needed with them it can dry out their skin and coat.
The frequency at which you bathe your dog would depend on several factors such as the type of coat that they have, specific health issues, and the sort of life that they generally lead.
You can always use the smell test to decide if you need to bathe your dog. Just smell them and see if there is an offensive odor coming from their bodies or not.
Some dogs just need more combing and brushing than others. This includes the long-haired and double-coated breeds such as Labradors, Huskies, and Beagles, to name a few. In the case of some dogs, bathing causes frustration and anxiety.
However, there are always a few tactics that you can try in these cases to help manage the stress levels when the dog is being bathed. Basically, you would need to do whatever you can to put them at ease during the process such as giving them treats and doing it slowly so that they have time to adjust to the same.
- non-slip mats
- dog brush, rake, or comb
- lots of towels
- dog-safe shampoos – in the case of double-coated breeds you would need de-shedding shampoos
- air force blower for blowing the double-coated breeds dry – however, you must only use it if your dog is used to the same and if you have access to the same
- dog-safe conditioners – in the case of double-coated and long-haired breeds you would need de-shedding conditioners
- helper – if you can get one
- rinsing cups in case you do not have a removable showerhead
- a pair of old clothes for the both of you
2. Brushing your dog
Brushing is one of the best ways in which you can bond with your baby. It makes sure that they do not shed as much as they would otherwise have. You can be sure that if you are using the right brush they would really enjoy the process.
You have to choose the brush, rake, or comb depending on the breed that your baby belongs to. For starters, just comb them from head to toe. Try and get as comfortable as you can so that it is a relaxing experience for both of you.
3. Cleaning the ears of your dog
It is very important to make sure that the ears of your dog are clean and healthy. This is why you must clean them regularly. You must also do it easily for the work to be effective.
There are a few things that you need for the procedure such as cotton balls, wipes for cleaning dog ears, an ear cleaning solution that has been approved by the vet, and treats.
You can use either the wipes or combine the cotton balls with the solution to wipe down all the skin that you can reach with the same.
You must not use the same wipe or cotton ball for both ears though. This is because with this if one of the ears is infected the infection would spread to the other ear as well.
If the cotton ball is too dirty it is better that you visit the vet with your baby in tow. They can take a closer look and take the necessary steps. You should also be wary of the likes of red ears, signs of inflammation, and odors.
4. Cleaning the teeth of your dog
Just like cleaning the ear, it is also important to make sure that the teeth of your dogs are in good condition as well. This reduces the growth of bacteria in that area, which prevents buildup and infections that can snowball to become more serious issues later on. If you brush their teeth regularly it can reverse and avoid dental diseases in your dog.
As far as your furball is concerned, it can be a bit disconcerting for them. However, the more often you do this the would get used to the same. Experts recommend that you brush on at least two to three occasions a week. You can also provide them with dental chews that can help the buildup of tartar and plaque.
There are a few things that you would need to get started in this case such as dog toothbrushes, dental treats, dog toothpaste, and treats. Make sure that you do not use the toothpaste that you use for them. You can start the process by giving them a small sample of their toothpaste. This would sort of get them ready for what is to come next.
5. Trimming the nails of your dog
If your dog’s nails are trimmed they would be comfortable for sure. It also makes sure that your floor and furniture stay protected from scratches. This is in fact applicable to your body as well. If you trim their nails at home it can be a bit intimidating for some dogs. However, some tips can make the job a lot easier than you may have imagined.
Before you try and cut their nails you should try and touch their paws while you are playing with them. You have to make sure that they grow more at ease with the prospect of you touching their paws. If this is not the case you can always ask for professional assistance in these cases.
So, when both of you get ready for the nail-trimming session it would be better if you call a friend for helping you out with this. You would need a trimmer, an assistant, cornstarch or styptic powder, and treats to get the job done.
You should always start the process at a spot that your dog is comfortable with. You also need to make sure that they are relaxed throughout the total process for it to be successful and free of any untoward incidents.
